Occupational health and safety management systems (OH & SMS) are gaining importance. Increasingly, they are being included among the central management tasks of the organization. With their integrated approach, they go far beyond the aspects of accident prevention and have become the key to guarantee the added value of operational processes.
Formerly known as BS 18001, the compatibility of the new ISO 45001 Version with the ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) standards significantly facilitates the implementation and certification of integrated management systems, allowing the use of synergies . This type of integrated management systems are fundamental tools of business management; its use demonstrates the acceptance of responsibility – for the good of humanity, society, and every organization.
According to a publication of the OSN, every 15 seconds a person dies in the world because of a work accident, according to data from the International Labor Organization – ILO.
Safety and health in the workplace are key to any organization, public or private, as it is useless that during the production process people are affected their health or even lose their lives, as this entails human costs and economic insurmountable and, in addition, violates the agreements signed with international entities that ensure the rights of workers.
Due to the above, it is necessary to establish Management Systems in Occupational Safety and Health (SGSSO), to help protect the company and its employees.
ISO 45001 is an internationally accepted specification that defines the requirements for the establishment, implementation and operation of an effective Occupational Health and Safety Management System. Under the name BS 18001 it has been defined for the first time by the British Standards Institution (BSI). In 2018 it became an ISO standard.
