ISO 50001 – Energy Management Systems

The increase in energy costs, the need to manage resources responsibly and the increase in world trade, require new approaches to the use of energy. In mid-June 2011, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published a new international standard for energy management systems: ISO 50001. The general objective of this new standard, called “Energy management systems: requirements with guidelines for their use” is to provide support to organizations in their efforts to implement systems and processes to improve their energy performance.

The systematic approach of the new standard is designed to allow organizations to achieve continuous improvement of their performance related to energy, specifically energy efficiency and energy savings.

Energy management (EnMS – Energy Management System) consequently supports organizations of any size, type or commercial sector to develop any potential, until now unused, for energy efficiency and implement concrete measures. In addition to saving costs, this also results in a permanent reduction in CO2 emissions.

The benefits of an Energy Management System:

  • Reduction of operational costs and an increase in profits
  • Reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases and other emissions, such as NOx, SOx and VOCx
  • More efficient use of available energy resources
  • Improve competitiveness
  • Other environmental impacts related
  • Increased awareness and assurance of legal and internal compliance
  • Increase in energy security potentials
  • Verification / validation of maintenance issues related to energy that are formalized to increase efficiency
  • Identification and understanding of those variables that affect the use and consumption of energy
  • Formalization of processes and practices related to design and acquisition specifications
  • Verification / validation of methods and data collection processes to ensure understanding of energy use
